The terraced river
The Douro Valley
The Douro is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world, its slopes cut into stone terraces that drop to the river above Porto. The day runs upriver by road or boat to the port quintas, with tastings of the fortified wines aged in the lodges and a valley lunch looking down on the vines.

Port in Vila Nova de Gaia
Across the river from Porto, the port lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia have aged tawny and vintage port in cool stone cellars since the 1700s. A cellar visit walks you through the barrels and the styles, ends in a tasting, and often pairs the glass with a live fado evening in the old town.
